Over the years I have enjoyed watching Apex, North Carolina grow and change, yet never lose its’ small town charm and unique character.  Thousands of people move to North Carolina each year and many choose the town of Apex to call their new home. Needless to say I was thrilled when the recent Forbes and CNN Money ‘Best Places’ lists were announced, finally giving Apex it’s much deserved time in the spotlight.  Earlier this week Forbes named Apex, NC the #3 best place in the country to move to.  To be considered for this honor, the area had to be a young, mid and upscale suburb, just outside a major city and with a population of at least 25,000. Also just announced, CNN Money unveiled their 2009 list of ‘America’s Best Small Towns’ and Apex, North Carolina was ranked #44. The ‘small towns’ on this list all boast strong economies, great schools, affordable real estate, low crime and much more!

Apex, North Carolina was first settled in 1867 and chose the name ‘Apex’ because the town was located at the highest point on the Chatham Railroad between Richmond, Virginia and Jacksonville, Florida. Like many cities and towns in the U.S., Apex struggled during the depression, but began to flourish in the late 1950’s.

Apex, North Carolina’s town motto is the ‘Peak of Good Living’ and its’ beautifully renovated, downtown area certainly exudes that feeling.  Take a stroll in the heart of the downtown area and as you pass by wonderful shops, art galleries and restaurants, you won’t help but notice the history. In the center of downtown Apex, you will find the old Apex Union Depot, a passenger station for the Seaboard Airline Railroad in a former life, it now houses the local chamber of commerce. The historic downtown area of Apex, North Carolina is listed on the ‘National Register of Historic Places’ and includes 60 buildings that were built from 1870 to 1940.

Nestled just outside of the Research Triangle Park, Apex is a growing area that boasts wonderful new home communities, great shopping, excellent schools and more importantly, an outstanding community.  However, town officials and planners are careful that even with growth, they don’t want Apex to lose the charm and splendor that attracted its’ residents there in the first place.
